Learn the art, science, and joy of sailing from patient, encouraging professionals.

Sailing Program Curriculum

This class focuses on having fun while learning the basics of sailing; rigging & launching a dinghy, including identifying wind direction, sailing a straight course, tacking and gybing around a buoy, recovery from capsizing, and general boater safety. Students will learn to tie knots, identify boat parts, points of sail, sail trim, and simple navigation. In addition, they will learn to assist others, develop teambuilding skills, boost their self-confidence, and learn to treat their equipment with respect. On bad weather days, the students will focus on water safety, knots, navigation, nautical terminology, and general seamanship skills. Classes will be held in all weather, fair or foul.

Four individual one-week-long sessions meet Monday–Friday mornings from 8:00–13:00.

A light lunch will be served to sailors every day from 12:00–12:45.

That’s a wrap on 2024! Stay tuned for 2025 dates!

IMPORTANT NOTE TO PARENTS: Student sailors may not be left unattended at the Boat Club therefore it is imperative that parents or guardians keep track of time and pick up their children no later than 1:00 pm each day. Repeat late offenders will be charged a fee.

Early registration is highly recommended! Only 25 sailors can be accommodated per week!

  • No, although we are always looking for boats to use or to be donated to the Summer Sailing Program, the Club owns a small fleet of sailing dinghies for use by the Summer Sailing program.

If you do have access to a boat that you would prefer to use, that is generally fine, provided it can pass a basic safety check.

Please do be aware that our students are mostly new to sailing, and as such there will always be some risk of collisions and minor accidents. The Club cannot be responsible for damage that may occur to personal boats in such an environment.

  • Yes, we encourage each sailor to bring a friend, sibling or guest. Please refer to the cost of each session on the downloadable PDF application form above.

  • Each session will try to build on the previous weeks, and as the sailors become more proficient and knowledgeable, class instruction will advance. No one, however, is excluded, and new sailors can join in at any point - they may just have a littlecatching up to do with the help of their new shipmates.
